I just finished book five of A Series of Unfortunate Events, and I gotta say, I think this one has been my favorite of the ones I've read.
The introduction of the Quagmire triplets and their suspiciously similar circumstances to the Baudelaires adds new depth to the series, as well as kid characters in a series that, for something soundly in the middle grade demographic, has had an astonishing lack of children other than the main characters so far.
Snicket's tangents have become more specific, more related to his past with Beatrice (she's the protagonists' mother, right? Even if I hadn't been spoiled on this a long time ago, I would've guessed it by now, they aren't really trying that hard to hide it).
Olaf's plan this time around, while convoluted as usual, did indicate that he's learning more about the protagonists' usual methods of dealing with his plans, and that he's not underestimating them as much as he did at the beginning of the series.
And yay, the VFD has finally been mentioned! We're getting a bigger focus on the overarching story, and I'm happy to see it! I'm excited for the Baudelaires to break away from the inevitably doomed parade of guardian to guardian and strike out on their own to solve the mysteries surrounding the series so far. I'm guessing that'll happen next book, and I'm hyped for it!
The adults being overwhelmingly useless (when not outright malicious) to the siblings, which used to annoy me with how heavy-handed it was, is something I've grown to understand. Over the course of the previous books, I've realized that I need to stop looking at everything so literally, taking everything so seriously and assuming that it's meant to be somewhat realistic. I mean, it's really more of an allegorical thing, right?
It's a representation of how it feels to be a kid, unwanted, seemingly all alone in the world, repeatedly let down by all the adults in your life...
To be technically dependent on adults for care, but to know that you can't rely on them for anything, can't tell them what's troubling you, because they either can't or won't help in any meaningful way, so if you want anything done, you have to do it yourself...
To know the truth, to know that something is wrong, but to be told again and again when you try and report it to the adults you're supposed to tell things to that you're lying, exaggerating, or just plain seeing things that aren't really there...
To have all your points ignored, brushed off, or labeled as "disrespect" even when they make sense, and to never be able to sway the adults' opinions, even when you point out the glaring holes in their logic, because they've decided from the beginning that they're right and you're wrong simply because they're an adult and you're a child...
And to rinse and repeat the previous two points over and over again, with the adults never realizing that maybe you do know what you're talking about, because they can't handle children possibly knowing more about anything than they do.
That's what the Baudelaires' experiences are all about, and it really is an unfortunate thing.
Okay, I have a lot more I could say, but blood pain period bad and I've had trouble putting my thoughts into coherent words all day. I hope this was somewhat understandable.
(Oh, and as a side note, I experienced The Austere Academy by reading it out loud to my parakeet, Troy, as his bedtime story, usually one chapter a night. It was a great way to read it, and I hope Troy enjoyed it as much as I did :D)

i saw the new miyazaki movie and i have a lot of thoughts. also i took notes almost the entire time. however since the word count on those notes is Bonkers i will not be organizing them or writing a cogent thesis at all. so i'm dumping everything from my notes app directly under a readmore.
War setting-framing-imagery apparent immediately
Conscription propaganda
research use of flag/choice to not depict symbol of imperial power when depicting time period. commentary from well-versed historians/animators?
Elderly women first characterized and animated to look unnerving as they swarm around the canned goods— reflection of mental state of perspective character?
heron flying directly out of rising sun over shinto lantern— came out of the decrepit european tower- broken wooden sword
Practice sword emulating father? Inheritance
Mass of fish and frogs swarming and compelling mahito to “join us” in apparent parallel to conscription imagery
Imagery of father’s shoes dividing natsuko and mahito’s
Father is the foreman of a war machine factory— child is at odds with agricultural volunteers
Bribes school for mahito’s exception from school- parallel to father’s own exception from war?
Self-reliance/ insistence on creating weapons/ stealing through more difficult means and bribing male figure while eschewing aid of female caretakers— still emulating aunt/stepmother in choice of weapon
Was too concentrated on training in weaponry to worry about natsuko
How to Live 1937- transition point into accepting help from elderly maid and searching for Natsuko. inheriting guidance
fecemi la divina potestate- dante’s inferno reference? Divine power made me
dante inferno beatrice and virgil? heron virgil figure?
Class and bloodline codified. inheritance again
Heron from wall design in mystical library that caused greatuncle to “lose his mind”. Power of art and representation? How to Live and its influence
Eyes in the sun motif in the center of the tower— closeup of heron’s eyes.
Heron’s power represented with water. Mother’s death- fire
Rose shattered— phantom of the opera reference? Organic material frozen as a rigid unchanging representation
Multiple paintings evoked- isle of the dead, ships, the plains, pilgrim looking over the mist
All of those who seek my knowledge shall die- at gate on isle of the dead
Rejects Kiriko’s help initially and attempts to send her away, but the representational world kiriko becomes a mentor figure, and he implicitly accepts the protection of the elderly women as guardian dolls
Kiriko is a very hot woman but there are a lot of mixed ideas about overfishing and humanitarian relief that are also tied up with what appear to be Soldier metaphors
The usual antiwar sentiments are here, but the framing of imperialism and imperial projects are difficult to untangle. Might be due to protagonist’s perspective? Confusion of positioning and coming of age. War and colonial project as inheritance?
The departure of the small figures/ letting the dead go
Death as a ship— departures
Eating as provision and care vs eating as predation and consumption
Water as illusion and death (eternity?) vs fire as vitality and ephemerality. Protection.
Kiriko’s outfit depicts wheels
Father prioritizing production over family/ Explicit depiction of war proceeding
Okay so explicit parallel of bomb with a Structure destroying surrounding life right before the meiji restoration— nature intrudes and the granduncle builds a european style tower that consumes those who go near
Father arms himself and dresses in symbols of imperial power/ stuffs chocolate and a sword in his suit while holding an explorer’s lantern
“The one who made the hole has to fill it”
Using a knife to cut fish or to mend the beak or to craft a new weapon
Flight imagery in different contexts— heron/ departure of the dead/ fire flight
Guard birds have lanterns/ constrained fire as opposed to the free burning flames
Parakeets- caged birds
Birds and consumption
the attempt to fight against imagined or fantastical danger that becomes ridiculous within the context of the real- parakeet soldiers become real/harmless parakeets
New life within a grave— cycles of death and rebirth
Natsuko’s morning/mourning sickness within the context of her grief Literally forced away from Natsuko by grief and representations of death that are then burned away by the power of her sister’s love and the thing that eventually killed her
Attempting to bridge the gap of rejection and being pushed away with acknowledgement of familial connection and a willingness to approach one another
The master of the tower continually evoked through famous western masterworks
The hallway of chiascuro- classical columns
Tapping at the geometric shapes. It’s literally a Study. His study is made out of artistic studies
God i wish i remembered the actual names of these paintings instead of just being able to recognize them
Evil greatuncle is the antagonist of slay the princess
His power of eternity comes from literal stone. Inorganic and thought to be unchanging, but subject to entropy
He imagines a world that is not subject to death and in this way disrespects the dead. His tools of study and construction are made from tombstones. Literally using the dead as building blocks
Stone and water are used to sharpen blades. Sharpening as an act of fighting against entropy
Food is a huge focus— plenty available for the parakeets, but the pelicans are starving. The shades cannot hunt for their own fish. In reality the people are desperate for canned food and rations
The parakeets eat people and display slavish devotion to their king. They all bear arms
Occasional staging like a Shakespearean play- hamlet moments
Silence when focused on the granduncle. Sound of wind when camera shifts to mahito
A tower built with malice toppling, an empire built upon graves, resentment for the frailty and mishandling of a structure leading to the parakeet king hastening its demise and destroying it with a symbolic weapon
Sincerity and death as interlinked concepts
Self-inflicted wound as representation of malice The granduncle trained in england and brought ideas back. Isolated self from family in pursuit of perpetuity and… art? Empire? Imperial control and its manifestations through art? Inherited ideas
Miyazaki’s antiwar sentiments always seem to be filtered through the understanding of those dwelling within or benefitting from the empire’s power
Mahito does explicitly refuse the building blocks of empire/ imperial tools and reject the project/ inheritance with reference to his own capacity for malice. Gestures at self-inflicted wound. Implicit acknowledgment that empires cannot exist without malice? Seems too narrow/individually focused, but may be symptomatic of a story that is simultaneously attempting to be about family, art, and empire. Inheritance as throughline
I do think Miyazaki should retire for real this time and make time to bond with his grandson instead of trying to transmit a lifetime of lessons through a symbolic art piece maybe

Saturday 16th November 2024
Mount Isa is a clean little city, neatly laid out in rows. Plain non-aspirational houses everywhere in streets with industrial names such as Carbonate St, Oxide St, Sulphide St. Not the sort of names that would attract you in Escape to the Country. You get the feeling that people view where they live is secondary to their place of work.
After a tiring day, working down the mines, theoretically, we should have taken a day off, but places to go, people to meet, don't you know. This morning was Saturday market, and being Saturday, we thought that most appropriate. The market was back at the Hard Times Mine, and the first person we met pulling up in the carpark was our guide from yesterday, Steve. He had just pulled up in his old saloon pickup. He slammed the door behind him, but we noticed he didn't lock or close the windows. On inspection yesterday, we couldn't help commenting between us that we have seen tidier skips and cleaner dust carts. But we had a laugh with him this morning comparing notes regarding climate change. It turns out he was brought up in Redditch!
There was nothing of particular interest at the market, which was mainly craft items, so we decided to move on and have a picnic at Lake Moondarra; a reservoir covering over 23.7 square kilometers and holding 107 Gigalitres of water plus roughly 50 freshy crocodiles. So quite big as lakes go. I'm led to understand that when these things were important, indigenous people's used the site as a stone axe quarry satisfying a market for such implements across distances as far as 1,000 kms away. Filling it with 107 GL of water might well have put a stop on that. The dam was built for Mount Isa Mines and, at the time, was the largest water scheme in Australia financed by private enterprise and completed in 1958. It was a beautiful place, and we viewed it from the usual lookout point high above the lake. Birds abounded, pelicans, darters, parakeets, swifts, and Tortoise Town lizards. We started a short walk called Wallaby Walk, which, although did have many a calling card left behind from a wallaby, actual wallabies there were none. It's a strange thing, but on this trip, to date, we have seen very few kangaroos or their marsupial counterparts. We shall keep looking.
By way of celebrating our last night in Mount Isa, we walked around the corner to the Barkly Hotel for a Stonehouse beer. A more swanky place would be hard to find even if you relied on your guide dog. The esteemed establishment faces the mine entrance, and clearly, this is a favoured watering hole. Christmas has not been too obvious in its approach to date, a trend quite reversed by the Barkly Hotel, which has made quite a feature of its forthcoming. Just inside the main entrance, you have a choice of either taking a left into the Pokies room (slot machines to any sane English person) or be delighted by the tasteful inflatable Christmas barbie. I think for those who know good taste you can get a general idea of the kind of place this is. Well, we got a couple of Stonehouse schooners and took a bar stool with other riff raff. Well, it was pleasant, and it's the stuff that makes for lasting memories, after all, isn't it?
We shall be moving on tomorrow and leaving Mount Isa behind. We really weren't sure how we would like this place; people had suggested it might be a bit rough, or there would be nothing to see here. We have enjoyed it very much and have seen some amazing things. But tomorrow, we will arrive in Cloncurry, which is not a million miles away from where we were last year.

Great Backyard Bird Off - the Americas (poll 11)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bird Info & Submission Reasons
Masked Water-Tyrant (Fluvicola nengeta)
"they appear in my backyard somewhat frequently and their little chirps used to make my dogs run outside to try catching them (failed very hard)"
Medium-sized terrestrial flycatcher, usually encountered near water and frequently found in urban areas where it can be quite tame. The call is a sharp loud “kirt.” (eBird)
Plain Parakeet (Brotogeris tirica)
"it might not look like it, but i assure you these birds do appear in backyards"
Small and uniformly green parakeet with a long pointed tail and a pinkish bill and feet. In flight, the blue outer wing feathers and tail tips are visible. Usually seen in noisy groups foraging in a variety of habitats including the canopy and edge of humid forests, plantations, and agricultural landscapes. Common in and around cities. (eBird)

Does Feather Color Racism occur? If so, which feather colors are commonly seen as "impure" and "hellish" for those who believe in it?
Sorry I've taken so long to answer this!
Aside from the stereotypes that the colors have, there’s no racism I’d say. The angel wings in my story are based on parakeets, so they’re pretty colorful, but there are “plain” ones. - Like Adrian or Jack who are white/grey and white/black.
If a fledgling shows up with wings looking like a pigeon people would be confused. The color doesn’t matter in the long run, though, since everyone gets the black-ish wings with eyes when they’re fully grown.
It hasn’t happened that a fledgling gets completely black wings (yet, *cough* the MC in the sequel will most likely have black wings *cough cough cough*). If that every happened the angels would be pretty confused, too.
Thank you for the ask!

The Good Book Every Sunday : Sunday Comics edition
Sunday Comics published in The Post-Crescent, of Appleton, WI, on January 14, 2024
Overall, pretty crummy to read. No joy was to be had in my Muddville this Sunday morning, for sure. To be fair, I did not seek out these funny pages, they were foisted upon me, as wrapping paper for a piece of ceramic art I bought. I saved them, naively thinking it might be nice to pretend I was a kid again, over my morning cup of coffee. Big mistake.
So many of these comics are worthless drivel, rising to the stooping level of plain stoopidity, so bad even a parakeet in a cage would not poop on these papers for fear of soiling their excrement. The lines, both the joke and the art, are so mundanely perfunctory that I managed to read the whole mess in under five minutes. Not one of these lame one-liners, poor Borscht Belt attempts, would raise a seven-year-old's eyebrow, and any seven-year-old could draw circles around these "clowns" art.
The lone exception being this PEANUTS reprint. Sigh, what a master ol' Sparky was! Note how each panel has a perfect flow into the next. See the subtle rise and fall of Snoopy's doghouse roof, just like a musical phrase. The gag is pure gossamer, but what lovely folderol! Just a tip o' the hat to Lewis Carroll's whimsy, but what sure-footed panache in that tipping! Bravo.

Monster March 2024- Day 27- Giant
Big Mama
Tumblr media
Another continuation from last year. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.
Thank you so much to the amazing @borealwrites for their Monster March 2024 Prompt List!
Monster March 2024- Day 27- Giant
Hemi and Pix- Big Mama
Hemi watched as his pups- now practically fully grown dire wolves seemed to greet Pix differently and if anything, treat her with more care and were even more defensive about her and would not leave her side for anything. They had met back up in Clayton and Kisska was still at the manor, checking on Duchess McClayton and her little Duke as well as her new pregnancy she had come down with since. Embry was practically tickled to be cooking for two crews. And Yasa was too as the two were happy to build one huge fire, surrounded by bricks to make something of a proper oven while Embry was happy to place sheets of metal over the bricks so that they could put pots on the metal as he was happy to keep feeding the flames coals from a separate fire. They all would be eating great tonight because they had chipped in on buying a steer.
Pix, seemed pleased to be reunited with them, and after setting up camp was content to sit by the fire in her camp chair, her falcons in a nearby tree, the dogs’ heads in her lap, receiving pets.
“What’s wrong?” Pix asked Hemi as she noted he was simply standing, and staring his own camp chair in his hands, but otherwise hadn’t moved as he watched his wolves behave with her.
“Nothing is wrong Pixie, just happy to be back with you.” He deflected before he set his chair down to sit down right next to her and rest as he mentally worked out what to say and how to say it before her falcons flew back, although they were happy to hop to his own shoulders.
“Well hello there parakeets.” He offered as he turned his head and then offered them scritches and pets as the falcons practically did become big parakeets to him as Pix snorted a laugh.
“I can hear your wheels turning from here.” Pix offered once they fell into a companionable silence after that.
“I don’t want to embarrass you by saying anything now in front of others. It’s nothing bad, it’s nothing terribly urgent. Everything is ok.” He murmured in a surprisingly soft and soothing tone.
“We can talk about it tonight before we go to bed.” He suggested.
“Is your mom ok? Your dad? Your sisters and your other brothers?” Pix asked.
“Yup, they’re all fine. I’m sure they’d love to meet you if you wanted to meet them.” Hemi reassured her.
“Actually I would like to meet them when we get closer to them.” Pix offered.
“We will definitely do that then.” He grinned happily.
“How is your family doing?” He felt compelled to ask.
“They’re fine. They were really impressed with you.” She offered with a pleased grin.
“I’m happy that they like me and won’t be giving you any trouble, at least over me.” He offered as Pix' expression grew a bit worried over how pleasant he was.
“Hey, I want to show you a new tattoo I got.” Pix urged as she reached out to hold his hand before she tugged on it to get him up to follow her before she pulled them into his cart that he had turned into a little home away from home where both of them could be together and be alone.
“Ok, what’s going on?” Pix asked.
“The only times you’re this soft and sweet is when I’m hurt and injured.” Pix urged as Hemi took a deep breath and knew it was best to be plain, honest and to the point.
“Hemtar and Sador indicated that you’re pregnant.” Hemi informed her.
“Oh. Oh! Ok, this makes more sense.” Pix practically giggled as her worry instantly dissipated as her whole body relaxed.
“Well, that would explain…everything.” Pix nodded as she steadied herself on his arm.
“So what do you want and need from me?” Hemi asked as he took her hand into his own.
“Other than introducing me to your family? Keep doing what you’ve been doing. You already take care of me and mine. And Kisska was hoping that with us staying together for the next several weeks would hopefully turn into several months and our two crews become one. Especially if the others are banging and hooking up, I can’t imagine that I’m the only one that either is or will be expecting. Is there anything you want or need from me?” Pix asked him.
“I just didn’t know if you wanted the pregnancy or not. And I was just trying to prepare myself for if you didn’t want it.” Hemi confessed.
“Oh, Babe, I do. I’ve been hoping for this actually. Why do you think I was so adamant that you’d meet my family?” She grinned as she scooted closer to him.
“Well, in that case, come here Big Mama.” He rumbled as he pulled her flush with himself and kissed her like he had missed her something awful.
"Ooh, Big Mama, I like that." She cooed as she fell into the bed with him, eager to get themselves undressed and rejoined as soon as possible.

{ID - digital art of the characters of Precinct 41 (Disco Elysium). They are in a white office space (C-Wing), decorated for a party. In the background, Trant -- in a pale brown suit -- walks into the room. McLaine is on Torson's shoulders, clinging to his head with one hand and hanging a disco ball on a light fixture with the other.
To the left, Jean sits at a desk, his head in his hands. He wears a pink bunny onesie, complete with hood. His tie hangs down the front of the suit, adorned with a pink bunny tie pin. Next to him, Judit stoically puts a hand on his shoulder. She is in uniform (including a holstered gun), and has a plain orange party hat on. Both of them look towards Harry, who is standing in the middle of the image. At the same desk, a bomber jacket is thrown over a chair. The jacket is decorated with images that look like black line drawing versions of the intricate 'Thought Cabinet' illustrations
Harry is wearing his default outfit, plus a pair of sunglasses, and he has a blue oblong pen in his pocket. He's singing into a microphone. In his other hand is a cowboy hat, still with a 9.99 price tag on. There is a parakeet with similar colouration to Harry on his head. Cuno is clinging onto his shoulder, tugging at Harry's tie and wrapping one leg around his torso.
In the very foreground, Mikael Heidelstam (wearing a blue and yellow party hat) looks with wide eyes up at a cake with three candles. It is decorated with slices of fruit and cream, and text that reads 'Precinct 41 RCM'. The cake is being put onto a desk by Kim, who is wearing oven gloves, a white t-shirt with sleeves rolled up to the elbows, and a black apron that has a picture of an orange with Kim's features (glasses and a wispy moustache) and text that reads, "Never fuck with Kim Kitsuragi". He is also wearing a blue party hat with two large googly eyes.
